The Phenix 28-70mm zoom lens built by Iron Glass for Ancient Optics is a rehoused vintage cinema zoom. The Angenieux 28-70 and Tokina 28-70 share the same optical design. Who designed it is unclear. But we can confirm they are identical in almost every way. There is strong evidence suggesting Tokina made all the Angenieux branded 28-70 zoom lenses. After thorough testing, the Tokina version was chosen for the Phénix Project.
The impressive range (28-70) and fast aperture (T2.7), combined with its character rich images, makes this special lens an ideal rehousing project for Ancient Optics. However, the source glass has extremely complex focus and zoom movements, making it a monumental challenge to properly rehouse. Many have tried and all have failed. The code has been cracked by the fabulous team at Iron Glass in Ukraine. Thanks to their talent and efforts, cinematographers now have access to these lovely images without having to sacrifice functionality. A truly no compromises housing.
The Phénix full frame zoom lens is parfocal in its new compact and lightweight cinema housing. Focus rotation has been expanded for accuracy to 300 degrees. The original 8 blade iris has been replaced with a new and robust circular 15 blade iris. Minimum close focus distance was improved to an impressive 1’9”. A stainless steel PL mount and Cerakoted aluminum exterior makes this lens reliable, rugged, and gorgeous.
