Based on the latest in design methods, optical glass, and findings on suppression of reflexes and stray light Carl Zeiss and its partner ARRI have introduced a new generation of fast prime lenses for Super 35, the Ultra Primes. The Arri / Zeiss Ultra Prime 135mm have been co-developed by ARRI and ZEISS, are manufactured by ZEISS, and are sold exclusively by ARRI. Ultra Prime Lenses have superior close focus ability and are able to retain their excellent image quality even at close focus and are also well controlled to manage distortion and breathing. They are relatively lightweight lenses that are a perfect optical match to the high speed Master Prime Lens series.  The Ultra Primes provide the optimal image quality, vivid colors, and skin tones for which ARRI/Zeiss are known. Each lens in the series features a T* XP lens coating for reduced glare and minimized reflections. The lenses’ fast, maximum aperture of T1.9 enables shallow depth-of-field shots. Minimal focus breathing does not draw attention to focus pulls, preserving the viewer’s cinematic experience. All lenses in the Ultra Prime series share common focus and iris gear positions, each with a 95mm front barrel diameter. Thanks to the uniform diameters it is quite fast for lens swaps with no need to reposition lens accessories. Ultra Prime lenses come with large, easy to read calibrated scales, and uniform position of exit pupil. Ultra Prime lenses are particularly robust and easy to service. The optical performance is superb, even wide open. Floating elements keep the optical performance up all the way to the close-focusing limit. Distortion is well controlled and so is breathing, especially with the wider angle lenses, where it counts most. The Zeiss/ARRI Ultra Primes currently are the largest set of cine prime lenses.
